Beanies have become a staple accessory for people of all genders and ages due to their effortless style and versatility. For example, when it’s chilly, a beanie will provide your head and ears with much-needed warmth. Or, when you’re having a bad hair day, throwing a beanie is an effective way to conceal the mess.

Arguably the best part about beanies is that they’re incredibly comfortable – kind of like a knit blanket for your head. While you may feel inclined to wear it wherever you go, there is a proper hat etiquette to follow. Continue reading to learn about the dos and don’ts for all of you beanie fanatics.

Can You Wear a Beanie Inside?

It’s generally frowned upon to wear a beanie, or any hat, inside. For decades, the standard has been to remove your headwear when you enter a building. Though this practice seems outdated, a gesture reserved for chivalrous men in old western movies, it begs the question: why do we do this?

Removing one’s hat when indoors is a sign of respect. That’s why men, especially, were taught to take off their hats during the national anthem, regardless of the occasion or where it’s being played.

On the other hand, women have more leeway to work with. Women are allowed to wear their hats when visiting someone’s home, at weddings, the movies, and even during the national anthem. However, ladies, it should be noted that you should not wear just any hat. Your headwear should match your outfit to be deemed acceptable.

Can You Wear a Beanie to Work?

Despite the fact that offices are growing more lenient regarding their dress codes, hats are still considered inappropriate at most workplaces.

A beanie is especially a no-no due to its more casual appearance. Unlike other hat styles, beanies are harder to dress up; pairing one with a full-length ball gown still wouldn’t get the job done. After all, it’s difficult to look professional during an important presentation while you’re wearing a beanie with your corporate attire. So, it’s recommended that you dress in a way that reflects the put-together image you want to promote at work.

Are There Exceptions?

But what if it’s really cold outside? Like really cold? Of course, rules were meant to be broken, and it is perfectly acceptable to wear a beanie in certain circumstances.

For example, if you work in construction, or any other outdoor job, during the winter months, you should be permitted to wear a beanie. When you’re outside and the blistering wind is almost painful, extra layers are a necessity.

Additionally, you may work in a relaxed environment where dress codes are not heavily enforced, if at all. If that’s the case, check in with your boss to find out if your beloved beanies are allowed.

Conclusion

So, although your beanie may seem like an innocuous accessory, wearing it at the wrong time may be considered rude and disrespectful. There are traditions for a reason, and following proper hat etiquette is recommended to remain respectful and professional. Save your beanies for more casual occasions, like walking your dog or hanging out with friends.
